Chrome tab groups disappeared: how to get them back

A tab group can go missing in three different ways: you closed it, the window it lived in was closed, or Chrome restarted without restoring the session. Each has its own way back.

If you closed the group a moment ago

Press Ctrl+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on a Mac). Chrome reopens the whole group, with its name and colour, as one step.

You can also open the three-dot menu → History. Under "Recently closed", a closed group appears with its name and its number of tabs.

If the group was saved

Recent versions of Chrome save tab groups. A saved group that is closed is not deleted; it is only hidden. Look for it in these places:

In menus, "Close group" or "Hide group" keeps the saved group, while Delete group removes it for good. If you chose Delete, only the History route above can bring the tabs back.

If the whole window went with it

Groups come back with their window. Open the three-dot menu → History and, under "Recently closed", choose the entry for the closed window (shown with its tab count). The groups return inside it.

If Chrome restarted and the groups are gone

  1. Do not restart Chrome again. Press Ctrl+Shift+T to restore the previous window with its groups.
  2. Check the saved groups in the bookmarks bar and in the Tab groups menu.
  3. If you use Chrome on several computers, make sure sync includes them: open chrome://settings/syncSetup/advanced and check that Saved tab groups is on. Groups saved on another device then appear here too.
  4. If nothing is left, the tabs themselves are still in chrome://history, without their grouping.
